favorite things at trader joes

traderjoesTrader Joe’s is a great place to shop.  Unfortunately the whole state of Colorado has zero TJ’s! So, this is post is for the rest of you that rave about all your purchases there- hopefully it will give you some new ideas of what to pick up next time you are there. These ideas came from about 6 loyal customers I know:

  • Lemongrass Chicken Stix
  • Jo Jo’s cookies
  • mandarin chicken and the sesame chicken
  • ‘apple crushers’ (apple sauce in a pouch with a plastic tube that the kids can suck the applesauce thru.  GREAT for airplane…no mess)
  • $2 Buck Chuck
  • pizza dough and sauce
  • wild-caught pacific salmon
  • chile verde frozen burritos or sausage/mushroom calzone
  • frozen spanakopita
  • salad mix that has baby spinach, dried cranberries, candied pecans and gorgonzola crumbles
  • edamame hummus and veggies
  • pre-made sushi
  • flax seeds (whole or ground with dried blueberries) and sprinkle on cereal, yogurt, mix into pancakes, etc.
  • wheetabix (1/2 price of other stores)
  • frozen avocado halves you just allow to thaw and you have perfectly ripe avocados ready for guacamole!
  • cheese (laughing cow, mozz sticks, also wedges or blocks of most — manchego, saga, Italian truffle!!!)
  • Kind bars (these are awesome)
  • frozen haricot verts
  • flowers
  • potstickers
  • almonds
  • Dr Praeger’s spinach cakes and california veggie burgers
*One last thing- there is a “Cooking with Trader Joes” cookbook which only uses stuff you can buy in the store…and you can also follow them on Twitter (which is mostly commentary about what other people like or don’t like.) Look for Whole Food’s favorites next week!

This is really not related to Trader Joe’s, but to the flaxseed you should purchase there! First of all, get it ground up instead of whole, so it can absorb in your body. For a detox I did a few years back, we had to take a teaspoon of flax with cranberry juice and water twice a day– not such a tasty combination. However, within 7 days, I kept getting compliments on my skin. That is the one part of that detox I have kept up with for over 2 years, although now I take it just once a day with V8 and use 2 heaping teaspoons each morning. It truly does wonders for your skin, as well as your digestive system (that’s as nice of a way as I could think of to say it). Flax has that good omega 3 fat in it plus many antioxidents–lots of health benefits. But honestly, just like exercise, I use it for the superficial outside benefits, and it makes your skin look great!
