amy’s favorite kid books
You should know that my friend Amy knows kids’ books. Besides editing them for many years, she is an avid reader and has always given our family our favorite books that we own. I asked her a for a list of her favorites and this is what she wrote:
After working in children’s book publishing for years, I was surprised when I became a mom at how difficult it was to find books that Henry and I both loved reading over and over. These are some of our family’s “classics”:
The Robot and the Bluebird, David Lucas
The Sea Serpent and Me, Dashka Slater
Moon Plane, Peter McCarty
Jeremy Draws a Monster, Peter McCarty
The Tub People, Pam Conrad
Not Afraid of Dogs, Susanna Pitzer
Snow, Uri Shulevitz
Rain Rain Rivers, Uri Shulevitz
Owl Moon, Jane Yolen
The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson
Night City, Monica Wellington
The Show-and-Tell Lion, Barbara Abercrombie
Toy Boat, Randall DeSeve
Little Rabbit Lost, Harry Horse
Every Friday, Dan Yaccarino
Night Rabbits, Lee Posey
We love Kevin Henkes, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and Mo Willems books, too!
This is a little off topic, but a good resource if anyone ever needs it. Grandad’s Prayers for the Earth by Douglas Wood, was a huge help to my nephew (and us) when my dad died. It is a great book to give if you know someone who has lost a grandpa, especially if they enjoyed the outdoors or nature together.
Thank you for this Kristy. It’s hard to know what give a child when someone passes away. I will keep this book in mind- appreciate your comment!
Thanks for this great list! I just found most of these books at the library and placed them on hold to pick up—love having good books to read to my girls and it’s nice to place holds on books and be able to run in and grab them when you have little time to spare in the library!
Stacy- I did the same thing. So far, my boys liked Not Afraid of Dogs and The Gruffalo best. We already owned The Sea Serpeant and Me (from Amy of course!) and it will always be a favorite.
